Alcester RFC Annual Tag Festival 16th October 2011

Alcester hosted their seventh annual tag festival for primary schools from the local area. 12 teams entered and those attending the well supported event were treated to some excellent tag rugby, on a beautiful autumn morning at Kings Coughton.

Bidford, Ridgeway, Welford and St Gregory’s schools advanced from the group phases to contest well fought semi finals, with the Stratford school St Gregory’s running out deserved winners (see below photograph) in the final by 5 tries to 2 against Ridgeway and to retain the trophy they won last year.

The two finalists, together with the select side made up of players from the other participating schools and chosen by the Alcester RFC “talent spotters” during the tournament, as well as a junior tag team from the club itself, will contest a mini tag tournament on the pitch at Sixways during half time in the Aviva Premiership match between Worcester and Bath on Friday 25th November.

Congratulations to all participants in contributing to this excellent and very well organised event.

The Brostin Warmwell Awards.. Season 2010/2011.

The Brostin Warmwell award was instigated by four loyal Alcester rugby club members who between them have over 100 yrs history of support and involvement with the club.

This year we have watched many 1st and 2nd team games both home and away and one person stood out – second team coach Keith Beech. The seconds ended the season winning their merit league.

The team having been turned around by Keith aided by David Gray and marshalled on the field by skipper Jeff Williams. The seconds in the previous campaign had been suffering regular heavy defeats with a depleting numbers of players to call upon, but with all Keith’s hard work they were turned into a well drilled and winning outfit losing only 2 of 16 league games. The 2nd team upheld the Alcester clubs standard of fair play and exciting running rugby.

Therefore this season’s award goes to the man who showed commitment and quiet confidence, going about his business in a professional manner the man with the clipboard Keith Beech. Congratulations and well done to Keith and his backroom staff.

The Brostin Warmwell certificate of merit as seen by the last of the summer wine crew (old farts on the touch) goes to a young man who we feel is always willing to help and support Alcester rugby club with enthusiasm and dedication. A young man who is a credit to his generation, who not only turns out on a Sunday morning for the under 14s but also runs the touch line regularly for both first and second team games. The certificate goes to Kyran Flynn. Congratulations to Kyran.

Alcester 6th Annual Tag Festival 2010

Sunday October 17th

The 6th School’s Under 11 Tag Festival was held at Alcester RFC on Sunday 17th October. Once again it was a great day with some fantastic rugby played by 11 local junior schools. The boys and girls really enjoyed themselves. The Festival started with two Leagues, followed by semi finals and a final. St. Gregorys overcame a determined Dunnington team by 6 tries to 4 in their semi and Bidford removed a stubborn Ridgeway team by 5 tries to 3. St Gregorys after coming close in many of the previous 5 years finally etched their name on the shield by 5 tries to Bidford’s 3 in a worthy final. St Gregorys go forward to play a tag match against an all star side selected from the Festival, during half-time of the Worcester Warriors game against Plymouth Albion on Saturday 13th November. Bidford will also get their chance to shine at Sixways against an Alcester RFC side

ALCESTER FUN RUN 2010

Sunday June 13th

The Fun Run, the traditional start to the Alcester Street Market festivities, was once again organised by the rugby club. 132 participants, ran, jogged and ambled around the near 4 miles course, in and around the Alcester town and surrounding countryside. Whilst the aim of the event is not a race, there is always a competitive nature to the run and this year was no different. Chris Davies was the first participant home by some distance. He was followed in by Adam Willington and Martyn Cole, with Jake Williams the first junior runner home and Natasha Day once again the first female entrant home. Thanks again to all of the organisers and helpers that made this event another successful one

Alcester Tag Festival Update

As a result of the recent Schools u11 Year 6 tag tournament held at Alcester Rugby Club a demonstration tag match was held at Sixways during half time of the Guiness Premiership, Worcester Warriors vs. Newcastle game. An Alcester select team from local schools defeated the winners of the ARFC schools festival by 5 tries to 4. In an exciting, fast paced game, the best U11s players in the local area entertained the Worcester crowd at half time. Tournament winners Welford took an early lead and remained one try ahead until the final minute when Alcester pulled level at 4 tries each. A dropped pass by Welford then gave Alcester their final opportunity which they took in the final seconds to record a narrow win.

Alcester Tag Festival

The 5th School’s Under 11 Tag Festival was held at Alcester RFC on Sunday. Once again it was a great day, despite the rain, with some fantastic rugby played by 8 local junior schools. The boys and girls really enjoyed themselves. The Festival started with two Leagues, followed by semi finals and a final. There was also a Plate competition, the final of which saw St. Nicholas as narrow 3 - 2 winners over Bidford. The main final was contested between St Gregory’s and Welford with Welford winning 4 - 3 in overtime. Welford, for the 2nd successive year will now go forward to play a tag match against a side selected from all teams at the Festival during half-time of the Worcester Warriors game against Newcastle Falcons on Saturday 7th November. Alcester RFC mini/juniors section train and play games on Sunday mornings between 10:30 and 12:00. It is a very enjoyable and friendly environment for boys from U7 to U19. Girls up to U12 are also catered for and everyone is welcome to come down and try it out.

Alcester Fun Run

Alcester RFC once again organised the annual fun run where 208 entrants, ran, ambled or walked the dog through the annual street market, out in to the immediate countryside and back towards the town over a total of approximately four miles. There was a competitive edge to this year's race with the eventual winner, Leon Alvins, just edging out the rugby club's own Spencer Lunn in a sprint finish. For the second year running Lunn was comfortably the first junior home with Zoe Blower the first female finisher in eighth position overall. Thanks go to all organisers, participants and sponsors with all funds raised going towards the Alcester fire fighters memorial garden and the Alcester RFC golden jubilee fund.

Alcester AGM/Pre Season Training

Alcester held their annual AGM on Wednesday 17th June, where officers were elected for the club's golden jubilee season. Steve Faulkner was invited for a second term as president, with Steve Lunn (Chairman), Andy Miller (Vice Chairman), Mike Edwards (Secretary), Dave Billingsley (Assistant Secretary) and Pete O'Dell (Treasurer) all re elected to office. Former club captain Pat Lamb was elected to the Director of Rugby position. It was not possible to confirm the 1st and 2nd XV captains positions and that of the junior representative on the committee, although it is expected that Scott Carmichael, Pete Goddard and Stevan Bailey will all be confirmed in their proposed posts, at the first meeting of the new committee later in the month. Coach Steve Lea has returned his charges to light training during June, with the intensity building up later in the month as Alcester prepare for life in Midlands Four West South following their promotion last season. Whilst turn out at early training has been good so far, they are still on the look out for new players of all ages and standards for the new season. Anyone interested can contact the club for more information (see www.alcesterrfc.co.uk) or by turning up at the club on any Thursday training evening from 7pm. It is anticipated that training will be over two nights from July, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Derek “Decker” Simons

All Alcester sides observed a minutes silence before their games this weekend 14/2/09, as a mark of respect to “Decker” who sadly passed away the previous week after a short recent illness, following a long battle against cancer. Decker was the current Veterans side manager, and junior section coach, and had been a long standing and highly regarded member of the King’s Coughton club. In his playing days he was a tough and uncomprising prop forward for Alcester and the former Bidford Rugby Club and he will be sadly missed by fellow club members past and present. Our thoughts go out to Deckers family at this sad time.

Taken from Coventry Saracens Website

Goliath (Alcester) 194 - David (Coventry Saracens) 3

As some people might have already seen or listened to on the radio, a very select bunch of hardened Rugby players had a little run around last Saturday (24/01/2009). Due to a few cry off’s (shopping with the wife I bet), Coventry Saracens 1st XV numbers had been reduced to just eight players, one coach and a select few supporters. With a few people scratching their heads just after we arrived, they started reading through the rule book to find a reason why the match should not go ahead. After a good 30 minutes -ish, the decision was made by all to play the game. Our game plan was to kick the ball as far into their half and make sure they had to run the full length of the pitch to score. Also with some handling errors during the game and quiet a few scrums, this went on to help keep the score line lower than it could have been. The battle continued throughout the game and included a superb drop goal from Craig Smith which broke our duck during the first half. The second half showed our levels of fitness, which during the first half had been stretched close to breaking point. This was seen when the Saracens rallied to prevent Mr Speirs (an Ex Sara player now playing for Alcester) from scoring. Some Saracens players ran from inside Alcester’s 22 or was that closer to their try line? I'm not sure, this prevented the Alcester player with the ball passing to Speirs and forced him to score himself. We would like to thank Alcester for the superb day and may the spirit of Rugby carry on between players from both and all clubs as it did on this historic day. There will be pictures of the Crazy 8 to follow.

Record league score declared void

Alcester’s English record league score of 194-3 against Coventry Saracens last Saturday has been declared null and void. Though Coventry Saracens complied with league regulations by fielding a full front row despite travelling with just eight players, they have been found to be in breach of the Laws of rugby by putting just three forwards into the scrums. The laws for 15-a-side matches require a minimum of five forwards in scrums at all times. The Midlands Leagues Organising Committee, the body responsible for administering leagues below National Three North and South, has now decided that Alcester should be awarded two matches points from the game but that the points scored will not be counted. If Alcester remain in contention for promotion from Midlands Six West (South East) at the end of the season their rivals’ matches against Coventry Saracens will also be discounted when it comes to determining the final league positions. The MLOC decided not to organise a replay as Coventry Saracens had honoured the fixture and done their best to comply with league regulations in difficult circumstances. “We have to say well done to Coventry Saracens for turning up and giving it a go,” said Paul Kaminski, the MLOC chairman. “Had they put five players into the scrums instead of three they would have satisfied the Laws of the Game. But they require a minimum of five forwards in scrums at all times and so we have decided to declare the score null and void and award the two points to Alcester. “We believe this is the fairest solution for all clubs in this league.”

Coventry Saracens praised after record defeat

COVENTRY Saracens have won praise from opponents Alcester despite suffering an English league record defeat last Saturday. Coventry Saracens were crushed 194-3 in Midlands Six West (South East) but they were forced to take the field with only eight players because of chronic selection problems. Their depleted side included three specialist front forwards and another who was capable of playing in the front row which meant that the game was completed without recourse to uncontested scrums and no league regulations were breached. We dropped three forwards out of the scrum to make it five against three in the scrums but all credit to Coventry Saracens for honouring the fixture,” said Alcester captain Scott Carmichael. “A lot of clubs would have cried off, but they turned up and insisted that the game went ahead so they deserve a lot of credit for doing that. “They have gone up in our estimation and we appreciated their efforts.” Alcester ran in 32 tries to improve their promotion chances and surpassed the previous highest score in a game in England, 177-3 set by Norwich in a Norfolk Cup match against Eccles & Attleborough 13 years ago. But Alcester’s points haul fell well short of the world record score of 350-0 set by French Third Division side Lavardac against Vergt in 1984. Vergt, who conceded 66 tries which were then valued at our points, offered only passive resistance in protest at having four players suspended. The previous week they were beaten 236-0 by Gujan Mestras in similar circumstances.

Well the new season is nearly upon us.

This season Hattie and I will be organising the pre-season training and also managing the teams on the pitch. The clubs objective this season is to finish top of the league and it won't be easy because all of our opposition will want to beat us.

Thursday 3rd July we will be starting the build up for the 08/09 Season with a bit of touch rugby and outlining the plans for the year. I will text you all to remind you.

Pre-season training will commence on Thursday 17th July at 7pm prompt and every Tuesday and Thursday thereafter. Pre-season training will be fitness and ball skills. There will be a different format this year, Tuesdays will be skills training when required and Thursdays squad / drill training. If for the odd week you can only make one evening please make sure its Thursday.

I would advise everyone that if you haven't already started training to get a few miles on the treadmill. This season will be fantastic and I believe it will be part of a successful chapter for the club, but it will only be as good as the effort that everyone puts in.

Alcester Fun Run 8th June 2008

Alcester RFC hosted the annual fun run on Sunday, before the traditional street market, in the town. Both events benefitted from the glorious June weather, although most of the 170 entrants that ran, jogged or ambled around the four mile course, probably wished for slightly cooler temperatures. James Bowler was the first entrant home in a time of 21 minutes and 10 seconds, ahead of last years “winner” Robbie Parker in second place. Natasha Day was the first female home, with 14 year old Spencer Lunn the first junior home, in an excellent fourth place overall.

Bidford Primary School & St Nicholas School at Sixways.

On a bitterly cold November evening, Bidford and St Nicholas junior schools were invited to re-contest their Alcester Tag final game. Whilst Worcester were still playing the first half of their game against Sale, both teams were taken to the indoor training area to warm up.

The Premiership game was televised and so the game could only last 6 mins, all player on, no rolling subs and no sending offs. Bidford won the toss and so when half time came both teams took to the pitch and the game commenced immediately. The passing was accurate and running fast, Bidford scored the first try, followed by St Nicks, then Bidford and again St Nicks, it was 2 tries each and we had only played 2 minutes.

Could the tempo be maintained? Of course it could these were fast and skillful children destinned for International honours, Bidford regained the lead following a passing move in which 5 players were involved, but St Nicks replied immediately.

The first team to lose possession without scoring might lose the game, then a Bidford player ran into touch just before scoring which the referee spotted. Would this be the turning point? St Nick attacked and took the lead 4 tries to 3, and it was Bidford turn to reply, 4 all,

With barely a minute left a player from St Nicks was tagged and as they threw the ball high in the air it fell into the arms of a retreating Bidford player who turned and ran in a try unapposed, 5 - 4 to Bidford. Frantically St Nicks retrieved the ball and will both teams starting to tire a swerving run resulted in the equalising try, with just 5 seconds left.

Five all on the night in front on 10000 spectators, a night to remember. A big thank you to the Community team at Worcester and to Peter Cook who organised the original tag tournament. And as for the ref, Robert Thompson seemd to have put on so much weight recently that he struggeled to keep up with play.

Alcester RFC are in the final stages of their preparations for the new campaign that begins officially on 1st September, when they play host to Shipston at King's Coughton (kick off 3.00pm)

The club has enjoyed a good pre season with healthy turn outs at training throughout the summer, and a number of developments to the facilities at the club house and grounds, led by their hard working committee and supported by other club members at two working weekends in the last couple of months.

On the playing side, Alcester had chance to test their progress with an early pre season invitational tournament at Old Yardleians, part of the Birmingham side's 80th anniversary celebrations. Alcester played three games against the hosts A and B sides, and fellow invitees Aston Old Edwardians. Missing several first team regulars due to holiday and cricket season commitments, the red and blacks acquitted themselves well against higher league opposition. They drew with the hosts A side, before succumbing to the B side by one try, and losing by two to the Aston outfit, a side that operate two levels above Alcester.

Training continues on Thursday evenings from 7pm at the King's Coughton and new players of all ages and standards are still required to bolster the numbers for the coming season, where Alcester plan to run three senior sides on a regular basis, as well as junior and colts sides across all age groups on Sundays. Anyone interested in joining the progressive club, should contact the clubhouse on 01789 764061, or come along for a drink and a chat on Tuesday or Thursday evenings or on Sunday afternoons.

It is with deepest regret that the club announces that long time Alcester player Colin Dean (gork) has passed away. Our thoughts go out to Colin's family at this sad time.

Alcester RFC held their AGM at the club house at King's Coughton on Wednesday 13th June, where the gathered members were able to reflect on a good season both off the pitch, and on it. The 1st XV finished 3rd in Midlands West Five West (South) and the junior section continues to grow from strength to strength, with a record level of members playing right across the age groups from ages 7 to 17.
